Longden/Langley, Robert

   Another name for Robert was Longden, Robert.

  General Notes:

Having looked in the records of the parish of Hope, where he claims to have been born (information obtained from the settlement examination paper of 1787 from Shrewbury Record Office, ref nr : P161/L/5/66), we found no Langley to suit, but found a Longden with the right name, birth date, matching father and mother's names, and a sister called Hannah. These all seem to indicate that he changed his name on moving to Shropshire.

Maybe the family was previously called Langley, but a mistake was made by some official which stuck and he used the opportunity offered on moving to revert to the old family name. More evidence of the circumstances surrounding this will probably come to light and we shall look for it.

His signature was spelt wrongly when he first moved to Shropshire as you will see on marriage register of 1774 which seems to indicate that he was not used to using the name Langley. He had got it right 13 years later, when he signed his settlement examination paper.

  Noted events in his life were:

• Moved to Shrewsbury. On moving to Shrewsbury from Hope he changed his name to Langley. This may have been the old family name.
